If you decide to use your hosts’ shared secure server certificate, then all you need to do is find out the path you need to use to call your files securely, and you will be on your way.
If you decide to get your own SSL certificate, this is generally what happens.
You first need to decide who you are going to get your SSL certificate from. It is a good idea to make sure your host supports your particular vendor. Some certificate authority vendors are:
* Thawte
* Verisign
* Comodo
* You can also review several vendors at a glance at WhichSSL
Before getting your own SSL certificate, you will need to do some reading on what your chosen Certificate Authority requires for a secure certificate, and you’ll also need to come up with some documentation. There are several steps to buying a secure server certificate, once you have decided on a vendor.
This is an overview, not written in stone. Each CA is different, so make sure you read their documentation and what they require. Here is an idea of what they want:
All documentation that is requested must match exactly. Secure certificate authorities will verify that your organization actually exists, so they know they are issuing to the correct company. You will need to prove that the Organization Name and the Domain name are in fact yours to use.
Steps you’ll be taking:
* Gather required documentation
* Have your host generate a CSR
* Complete certificate authority online application
* Certificate authority will process your request
* Pickup and install your SSL certificate (usually an URL is emailed to you to download the secure server certificate)
* Depending on the vendor, it can take a few hours to a few days.
* Send secure certificate to host for installation. (Send in plain text)
Once your web hosting provider receives this information; they will generate the CSR and send it back to you in plain text. You then send it on to Verisign or Thawte, or whoever you have chosen as your secure certificate authority. They will then generate a SSL certificate for you which you will send back to your host for installation. Your web host may charge a fee for installation in addition to what your SSL certificate vendor charges.
Something to think about:
If you’ve decided to purchase your own SSL certificate, you will need to decide how you want your URL to be called. If you, as a rule, call your domain name in your coding as www.yourdomainname.com, then make sure you indicate this to your host when you request a CSR from them. If you don’t, and you get the certificate for yourdomainname.com (without the www), this will cause browser errors, making the certificate seem insecure, and you will need to change your coding.
Always use yourself or your company as technical contact.
How to tell if a site is secure?
After you’ve browsed to a site securely; using https:// in the URL, look on the lower right hand side of your browser. You should see a closed lock. This will tell you the site is secure.

So what’s the problem? I can switch on my computer 24 hours, 5 days a week!

True. In fact, anyone can switch on their computer 24 hours, 5 days a week. But at what cost? Do you know that:

Most computers/software hangs or breaks down at least once a month because of virus, memory leak/shortage, bad software, component overheat, etc?

Your MS Windows might go blank or show blue screen once a while?

Your hard disk might suddenly crash on you on a one fine day?

Once in a while your residential/home area might experience blackouts/electric power loss?

Your kids might be playing near the computer and accidentally trip on the wire plug.

Now, what if any of these unfortunate events happen when you have an open trade made by the expert advisor? What if you have a few open trades made by the expert advisor? (FACT: Most EAs might open a few trades at one time). And what if you are not there to remedy the situation.

Best case scenario: your open trades are making a fortune while you are trying to get your computer running again or get you electricity back.

Worst case scenario: all your open trades are automatically closed, by the forex software because you ran out of free margin (capital). In other words, you can lose all your account money because of one, unexpected, unfortunate event.

Simple Solution

If you are not a professional forex trader, does not mean you cannot act like one. All professional traders who use expert advisors, run their forex software separately on a different machine, maintained by computer hardware professionals. You should do the same and it does not cost that much either. In fact, it would cost only a fraction more than the cost of you running your computer 24 hours, 5 days a week yourself (FACT: The cost for you to run a computer 24 hours, 5 days a week ranges from USD18-USD20 a month). The idea is to subscribe to this service (also known as Virtual Private Server/ VPS Hosting), install your metatrader and your expert advisor there. From that remote machine then you can run your EA to automatically trade forex for you. It is much safer, guaranteed.

So how do i know which server to subscribe to?

First of all, lets do a checklist of what you need.

Your remote machine should be running all the time, meaning this service cannot say they have any less than 99% up-time. (1% or less downtime is usually necessary for maintenance and they usually notify you beforehand). This is the main reason you are going for this service or else you could have done it yourself.

If you are only familiar with MS Windows then make sure you are subscribing to a MS Windows-based remote server. You do not want to be surprised when you logged in and see an unfamiliar desktop e.g., linux desktop environment and then do not know what to do.

It should be cost effective since you are only running 1 software there (for my case, its MetaTrader software). If you bought FAP Turbo as your expert advisor, then they are recommending a service provider at a cost of USD70 a month. I am not saying you should not consider them but I can assure you there are a bit cheaper service provider out there.

It has to allow your forex software to execute and trade properly. For your information, there are many types of remote hosting services out there. There are File hosting, web hosting, dedicated server hosting and virtual private server or VPS hosting. VPS Hosting is the one you are looking for since it is the only service that allow you to access a desktop, run executable software and allow internet port access aside from the http port. Actually, dedicated server hosting also would give you the same service but it is definitely an overkill and normally more expensive.

Optional for tech-savvy people but a must for others. Choose a service provider that ensure their VPS service is ready for forex trading. This is to eliminate any excuse for them to tell you why your attempt to trade forex on your subscribed machine not possible/supported.

SSL provides visitors to your website with the confidence to communicate securely via an encrypted session. For companies wishing to conduct secure e-commerce, such as receiving credit card numbers or other sensitive information online, SSL is essential.

For SSL to work a valid signed SSL certificate is essential. Certificates are a standard way of binding a public key to a name. Public key encryption is a tactic that uses a pair of asymmetric keys for encryption and decryption. Each pair of keys consists of a public key and a private key. The public key is made public by distributing it widely. The private key is never distributed; it is always kept secret. To enable SSL for your website with self-signed certificate:

Click on the Site tab; Select Website Settings. Your website General Settings appear on the screen; Click the Secure Website tab. The secure website summary appears on the screen; Click the Generate a Request button. The certificate-request form appears on the screen; Fill the form:Select your country of residence from the Country drop-down menu. If needed, scroll the list; Select your State from the State (US or Canada) drop-down menu; Or type your State in the State (other countries) textbox; Type your city or town of residence in the Locality textbox; Type your company name in the Organization name textbox; You can optionally type your company branch or affiliate name in the Organization unit name textbox; Type your website name in the Site name textbox; Click the Submit button. The updated secure website summary appears on the screen: now both the certificate request and private key exists, but the secure website is not available because the SSL certificate is absent;

Note: Do not forget to backup your private key: click the SSL private key details link (the private key content will appear in popup window) and copy your private key content to a file.

7.  Click the Generate the SSL Certificate button. In a few seconds the screen reloads with the updated secure website summary: now the certificate is in place and the secure website is available;

8.  Click the Enable SSL button.

To send a certificate request to an external certificate authority (if certificate request is already generated and the private key saved, as described in steps 1 -7 above):

Click on the Site tab. Website general settings appear on the screen; Select Secure Website tab. The secure website summary appears on the screen; Click the SSL certificate request details link. The content of certificate request appears in the popup window; Copy the certificate request content in a file and send it to the certificate authority.

To import an SSL certificate signed by a certificate authority:

Click on the Site tab; Select Website Settings. Your website general settings appear on the screen; Click the Secure Website tab. The secure website summary appears on the screen; Click the Install the SSL Certificate button. The form for SSL certificate importing appears on the screen; Do one of the following:Type the path to a file containing the SSL certificate in the Certificate file name textbox or click the Browse button to locate the file; Or paste the certificate content in the Certificate content textbox; Click the Submit button. The secure website summary appears on the screen; Click the Enable SSL button.

To import both your backup SSL certificate and private key:

Click on the Site tab; Select Website Settings. Your website general settings appear on the screen; Click the Secure Website tab. Secure website summary appears on the screen; Click the Install the SSL Files button. The form for both the SSL key and certificate importing appears on the screen; Submit the key and certificate:Type the path to a file containing the private key the Private key file name textbox (click the Browse button to locate the file) or paste the private key content in the Private key content textbox; Type the path to a file containing the SSL certificate in the Certificate file name textbox (click the Browse button to locate the file) or paste the certificate content in the Certificate content textbox; Click the Submit button. The secure website summary appears on the screen; Click the Enable SSL button.

Notes:

Netscape and Mozilla browsers automatically detect whether a website uses encryption of transmitted data or not (as for Internet Explorer, please encourage your website visitors who use IE to use Internet Explorer 5.0 or later). Thus, if you use a self-signed certificate, your website visitors will be notified that your website uses encryption, but the authority that signed a certificate is not recognized. So if you intend to conduct e-commerce at your website, it is better to obtain an SSL certificate signed by VeriSign or Thwate.

Secure website can be enabled only for IP-based website (i.e., a website that does not share an IP address with other websites). So if you have several websites on your server and only one IP address – any of these sites (but only one of them) can be SSL-capable. Go for GeoTrust Power Server ID Wildcard Certificate.
